I am often surprised by the variety of book tastes among friends as revealed by the books they recommend to me. So I should have been cautious about this one as another one recommended by the same unnamed person was a big disappointment. But I am a slow learner. I do know that when one very bright acquaintance recommends a book, I can ignore it because it is always science fiction, a genre I generally dislike.
In this Vancouver- based novel, the home town of the author, three very different people reach the end of their tolerance and snap, producing criminal acts of anger all caught on tape, with career-limiting consequences. As an alternative to criminal charges, they are ordered to perform community service under strict supervision. The plot gets much more complex, with many other colourful characters, and a lot of bed-hopping, but in the end all three are redeemed.
The writing is not particularly inspired but the author does have a vivid imagination. I thought at least one of the characters who snapped should not realistically have been charged with a criminal offence.
