This is the newest novel of the Somerset, England writer.
The plot is somewhat complex but the characters are easy to keep straight. It involves the letters and a book pick a month for a year that a young London man dying of cancer secretly chooses from a book seller to give to his grieving wife. This takes her on adventures that she would never have considered, being a book lover herself, while he was the adventurer. This includes surfing and camping in the wilderness of Jura in Scotland.
By about 100 pages from the end, the astute reader may conclude that the young widow is likely to become the bookseller’s wife. But they both deny their love and numerous obstacles seem to make that impossible. Only in the last few sentences do those obstacles disappear.
Set in modern times, this book becomes an emotional romance novel of sorts, that may appeal more to women than men, but even though I generally avoid romance novels I found it absolutely delightful.
